RIGOR MORTIS

RIGOR MORTIS

1) What's up with Rigor Mortis?

BRUCE CORBITT: Well I guess you could say Rigor Mortis is a part time band at the moment. Casey is back with GWAR, Mike lives in Austin, Harden is in Mitra and I am in Texas Metal Alliance. So we are only able to get together here and there to do shows. Obviously we are all psyched about being on Ozzfest. It’s really cool to be part of the Texas Stage with other great Texas bands. The Ozzfest gig has us talking about setting up more shows and even possibly writing some new material.

2) What's the status of the next album?

BC
: Well nothing has been written yet, but like I just mentioned we are talking again about working on some material.

3) Looking back at the Texas metal scene of the 80's, what do you feel it's lacking now? & How do you feel being from Texas influenced & shaped the bands style?

BC: I don’t think being from Texas really made any difference in what was going on. But we did have some of that Texas pride inside us. I just think there are a lot of talented bands and musicians in every state. We had a lot of bands back then that was innovators and didn’t just go with the flow of the local scene. Those bands created their own local underground scene and many of the clubs actually changed their format to adapt to what these bands started. I am actually working on a DVD documentary about the birth of the D/FW metal underground right now with 12 Pound Productions.

Nowadays it’s totally opposite around here; you have all these musicians giving up on their original music to be in some cover or tribute band, because that is what is hot around here at the moment. Sure those bands might be able to make more money right now. But, it is a dead end street because this tribute band fad will fade out. Plus most of them will never be able to record or tour with a tribute band.

4) Did you guys play much with Oklahoma metal bands in the old days as well?

BC: Oliver Magnum is the band that comes to my mind first. I know there were a lot of other great bands from there that we did shows with. Many of them would come to Texas and play at clubs like Joe’s Garage. We also loved going to play shows in Oklahoma… the crowds there were always insane.

5) Regarding the song "Foaming At The Mouth" on the DOWC2 soundtrack, why wasn't the band included on the movie as well?

BC: That movie was near completion when we were recording our 1st album. There was a small chance that they would film us for the movie. But, we almost had to change our name at that same time because of a Punk band that had released an independent album using the name Rigormortis. We couldn’t come up with a new name overnight and a month or 2 went by. We were finally able to buy the rights to the name Rigor Mortis. But, by that time the filming of the movie was already finished.

Our Capitol A&R Rep Rachel Matthews was still able to get our song on the soundtrack. Rachel tried to get the song at least playing during the closing credits of the movie, but that never happened.

6) How do you view the current thrash resurgence bands like Municipal Waste?

BC
: Fuck, I am all for those bands bringing some life back into thrash. Obviously that will just help get new thrash fans to discover old bands like Rigor Mortis.

7) What can fans expect from your Ozzfest set? How do you feel about playing for a new generation of fans?

BC: Fuck, they can expect a set of blistering relentless Rigor Mortis crowd pleasers. We plan to be as prepared for this show as we ever have been for any show. We know our set will be short and it will be hot as fuck at that time of year in Texas. So we are just going to go off and sweat our asses off like everyone else in the crowd. We think it’s cool that we will be playing for a lot of people that have never seen Rigor Mortis. It will be up to us on whether they will like us or not… I guess we will see.

8) Can you tell us a bit about Texas Metal Alliance & how that came about?

BC: Yeah, I am proud of the new band I am part of. We are called Texas Metal Alliance and we are writing new material at a rapid pace. This band was formed to do a one-show benefit for Hammer Witch bassist Wayne Abney after he had suffered a near-fatal motorcycle accident. We weren’t able to get Rigor Mortis, Gammacide, Rotting Corpse and Hammer Witch to play on that date for various reasons. So we decided to just join forces and do some songs together from all of our bands.

After that gig went so well, guitarists Rick Perry and Scott Shelby of Gammacide suggested we make it a real band. So we got bassist Alan Bovee of Devilfist and drummer Joe Gonzalez of Demonseed to complete the lineup. You can check out some of our new material here…
