ANIMUS MORTIS Q&A |
1) Can you give a breif history of the band? Sidragath: Well, Animus Mortis began in 2004 when N. Onfray had a couple of songs already written and he called me in order to finish the songs and with
(with those) did our demo “Desolated Landscapes” and since that we’ve worked together with other musicians.
2) How would you compare the songs on Atrabilis to earlier material? Sidragath: Atrabilis has almost the same concept of the earlier materials but it’s more completed and it has better songs, sound and we reached what we were looking for in our songs.
3) How's the black metal scene in Chile? How do you think being from Chile influences the sound of the band? Sidragath: The black metal scene is kind of small. There are some good bands but almost all of the scene is like death and thrash metal bands…In Santiago, Chile there exists a few locals or some places where the metal scene moves. So there are many bands, a few places to do gigs and almost all the bands are the same shit… but anyway there are some good bands like Mar de Grises, The Last Knell, Hetroertzen, Gorjeo Seglar, etc.
I think our influences are based in ourselves and musically in atmospheric things and the black metal of 90's could be also (an influence).
4) How does the writing process work for the band? Do you have an idea of where lyrics should go ahead of time or are they written after the music?
Sidragath: Really, we don’t have a special process when we write lyrics … Sometimes I write something and sometimes N.Onfray arrives to the rehearsal with some lyrics then we see what lyrics are perfect for the song or what song is perfect to the lyric …
5) What recording elements are best for getting a dark atmosphere in the studio?
Sidragath: Elements like what?...drugs or wine?? I don’t know. N.Onfray has a great hand when he writes the guitar parts and it’s where the atmosphere comes from. Obviously all of the band fulfills a special role, at least in what we do each one is fundamental. It works in that way because all of us have something to contribute in the developing of the sound and music.
6) How does the band differ live?
Sidragath: I can't describe with words how it’s like. You have to see with your own eyes. We always play hard and with soul, our shows have a pretty great dark atmosphere.
7) Can you tell us about the meaning of the symbol on the cover & the CD title? Sidragath: The symbol represents the death, the resurrection and the life time of the human being… more than symbolize a final state, what we look for is to narrate the agonizing perpetual process that we experience along the existence and “Atrabilis” was the perfect title to that. Atrabilis is the black vomit of all the agonizing feelings of the human and at some points its feeling is closer to death itself.
8) Who are the bands influences? Sidragath: I don’t know, I have many bands that I like… some of those could be Satyricon, Dissection, Devil Doll, Darkthrone, Sepultura, Slayer, etc….also I find inspiration listening to
atmospheric bands and we all listen
to some metal and black metal bands like Kvist, Manes, Isvind, Ungod, Lustmord, Toxic Holocaust, Xasthur, Negura Bunget, etc. But we don't find any direct influence, at all.
9) What are your favorite black metal bands & albums of all time? Sidragath: I don’t know, man …. I like bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead to Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Darkthrone, etc…And also I listen some other progressive and experimental bands. I don’t have a favorite black metal or other metal album of all time.
10) Do you think black metal should have fresh or new elements? Do you think there's growth left in the genre?
Sidragath: I don’t think there is a black metal fresh sound … For me Black Metal always will be the same-like the black metal from the beginning of the 90’s and I think there isn’t much growth left. We try to keep that first feeling in our songs and put our own thing on it.
11) What's next for Animus Mortis?
Sidragath: Right now we’re working on new material for more cold releases to come, maybe some split (releases). I hope in the near future to arrange some gigs out of Chile.
12) Do you think attitude is more important than technical ability within metal?
Sidragath: I think all is important, the feeling in what you’re doing, the technique and also the attitude-to performing what you feel in the music…all is a complement.
