AVSKY |
![]() 1) What, inspired Malignant? How did the songs take shape & how did the writing/ recording process differ from past material? AE: With “Malignant” we wanted to take the Avsky sound one step further, to write more hateful and raw music. We also wanted to get a filthier production on “Malignant” than we had on “Mass Destruction” and I think we succeeded. Our greatest source of inspiration is Eighties and early Nineties Black Metal and disgust for mankind. The recording process didn’t differ any from our earlier recording. We used the same studio and the same equipment as on earlier recordings.
2) What's your approach to getting the proper ugliness onto tape?
AE: We used a lot of distortion and the studio we’re using is a very low-budget one, but it’s ideal for creating exactly the sound and production we’re after.
3) What bands helped to shape your style the most? Do you feel black metal should stay raw & primitive? AE: The early Scandinavian scene has been most important for our style, Bathory, Burzum, Darkthrone and so on. I prefer my black metal raw and minimalistic, but there are really great black metal bands around that aren’t primitive, like DsO and Watain.
“Our Greatest Source Of Inspiration Is 80’s & 90’s Black Metal & Disgust For Mankind”
4) Are there any plans to do live shows? What would be the ideal live situation? AE: If we could find the right musicians to help us out we might play shows in the future. Don’t know what the ideal live situation would be, I guess time will tell.
5) Can you tell us a bit how Avsky was formed? AE: Don’t really remember exactly how the band was formed. I had played in some local Black Metal bands before I and TO, started to play together, but I and TO work very well together, we have the same visions and ideas.
6) What initially drew you to black metal music?
AE: The thing that first drew my attention to black metal was when I, back in 94-95, read in (the) media about the Burzum/Mayhem murders and church burnings. Like any teenager interested in extreme music I were really fascinated about this dangerous and obscure music. Before that I had mainly listened to Death Metal like Morbid Angel, Carcass and Napalm Death.
Our biggest collective influences are bands like Hellhammer, Darkthrone, Bathory and Burzum.
7) How would you describe the vision of Avsky? Do you feel atmosphere & attitude is as important as musical ability? AE: Our vision is to bring back danger and obscurity to black metal, to make black metal cold, raw, and hateful again.
The most important thing is to write good songs. If you can’t write good music it doesn’t matter how skilled musicians you are. Just look at bands like Bathory or Hellhammer, not very good musicians, but they created music you could kill for.
8) Do you see Avsky progressing into different directions in the future?
AE: I think Avsky will continue to evolve as we become better and better musicians with every recording but we will stay true to our sound. It’s hard to draw a line for progressing, as long as its still good music.
9) What do you feel is the most important element of black metal drumming & guitar playing & how do you feel its style relates to death metal or thrash? Do you think minimalism is more effective within black metal?
AE: No idea what the most important elements of black metal drumming or guitar playing (are); or if they differ from other metal genres, but death, thrash and black metal has evolved from the same origin so naturally the different playing styles relate to each other.
I think one of the original ideas with black metal is just minimalism, it can be very effective and powerful (when) used right. Not only (in) the music but also (the) album covers etc. have had a minimalistic approach in black metal, with much black and white. I think it’s very appealing.
